Antique Walnut Box

April 13, 2010

The final item for round 3 is an antique walnut box that cost £33.25 + £9 postage, the auction details are below:

The reason I’ve bought this is 2 fold really.

Firstly I think it’s always a good idea to buy antiques that people can use today, and I think this is a great box for that purpose, it has a quite unusual layout inside – more on this later.

Secondly, I think that antique boxes are really undervalued, but if you can find the right person who has a use for it then you can sell them on for a reasonable amount of money.

I also love walnut veneer!

Walnut is the veneer that was used on furniture in the mid 18th Century in England until a walnut shortage after extremely bad weather in France forced the use of other woods, like mahogany, rosewood, and more exotic woods.

Walnut veneered items have a very mellow, attractive look and personally I find them very appealling.

Anyway, this box (there’s a better photo below) has a very unusual interior, with a lift out drawer, as shown in the photo below:

It clearly isn’t a writing box, or a jewellery box, in honesty I have no idea what it was used for even though it’s described as a specimen box, and this probably would be a great use for it (if anyone does know what it was originally used for I’d appreciate knowing).

Collectors of all kinds of things, from antique pens to gemstones could easily have it adapted to serve as a magnificent display case for their prize items.

Alternatively it would make a very handsome cigar box!

I’m sure there are plenty of uses that could be thought up for this today, and being such an attractive box I’m sure that it will do well when I come to sell it – I hope!

Keep watching to see how it does!
